Conclusion

The Department of Tamil is one the pioneering study programmes in the history of university education in Jaffna. When the Faculty of Humanities was established as one of faculties of the Jaffna Campus of the University of Sri Lanka in 1974, Department of Tamil was included as one of the four Departments. One of the vociferous demands of the ‘Tamil University Movement’ which was started by the Tamil philanthropists and scholars by the early 20th century was that university education in Tamil is necessary to study Tamil language in the tertiary level in order to preserve its classical and ancient characters. The seminars, conferences and celebrations related to Tamil studies organized by the Department of Tamil from its inception in 1974 has evolved down through the decades and got a new dimension lately as international Tamilology research conferences.
